Sentinels in Motion (April 20th, 2026)

A Look Into the Spring Season

As new opportunities continue for Sentinels interested in representing their school, I am reminded of how grateful we are to be able to go and watch these teams and students perform.  Whether it is fine arts or athletic activities, it is so rewarding to see the God-given gifts being exercised. Watching the sense of community of belonging that these Sentinels receive from being a part of something bigger than themselves reminds me of why these opportunities are so important at Stella Maris Academy.  The schedule can be found by going to our activities website at sentinelactivities.academy. In the news

Upcoming May 14 Event

Last year, we had our first Fall Registration Night at the high school.  The goal of this event was to give parents and students an opportunity to meet their fall coaches and register for the fall season.  It is important to register early for the Fall activities in order to plan for coaching and scheduling of competitions.  This was a fun event that combined a free t-shirt, pizza and even discounted registration.  We will be holding this event again this year, but will also be combining it with the opportunity to see, try on and purchase uniforms for the upcoming season.

Nordic goes to state

Carson Gilbertson qualified for and performed very well at the state competition this year.  Carson is a 7th grader and was the only 7th OR 8th grader in the state of Minnesota to qualify for state!

Alpine goes to state

SMA sent TWO alpine skiers to state this season!  Luciana Jackman, an 8th grader, represented Stella Maris Academy very well at the state tournament.  To reach this goal in only 8th grade is an amazing testament to the time and effort she has put into this sport.  Annabel Hanson has been to state on multiple occasions – twice representing SMA, but this was her best year ever.  In her senior season, she finished sections in 1st place statewide.  At state, she finished 4th and was invited to represent the area in a national competition.

Talent show

On March 14, Stella Maris held a talent show at the College of St. Scholastic’s Mitchell Auditorium.  The show included 18 acts from grades 4-12 as well as some staff performers.  Three high school students served as MCs for the event.  Caroline Anderson, Danika Fedora, and Annabel Hanson.  Winners for the event were Vladimir Peterson (elementary) for his piano performance and Ingrid Oase and Krista Altonen (high school) for their song and guitar performance.  Before the talent show, we were all treated to an art show showcasing some of SMA’s very best drawing, paintings and photography!  All proceeds from the event went to SMA activities.

Date for Fall Flannel Fest featuring the Father Ben 5k!

Please save Saturday, October 10 on your calendar.  This is a great opportunity to explore the 5K Sentinel Trail (racing or taking it at your own pace) and enjoy great family fun and food.  This will be our third flannel fest and there are plans to make it bigger and better than ever.  Like the talent show, all proceeds go to SMA activities.

Recap of our Winter activities

Boys Basketball

This 2025/26 season marked the inaugural MSHSL year for our boys program.   SMA competed at both the varsity and junior varsity levels.   Because our numbers are good at the elementary and junior high levels, the future looks bright for the boys basketball program.

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball program continues to grow in numbers. Our hope is to have our first MSHSL team next season.  This team will likely compete at the junior varsity level.  In addition, we are anticipating a junior high as well as several elementary level teams this coming season!

One Act Play

Participating in this MSHSL activity for the third time, the SMA One Act Play participants had their best finish at sections to date.  Finishing just one place out of advancement, this team full of seasoned actors really shined on stage again this year!

Boys Hockey

2025/26 marked the first hockey season that Stella Maris Academy participated in MSHSL boys hockey.  Stella Maris Academy along with three other schools (Two Harbors, Silver Bay and Cook County) were a part of the North Shore Storm.  Five SMA boys skated for this co-op team this hockey season!

Cheer

Our cheer team once again (second year at the high school level) cheered on our boys and girls basketball teams this season.  School spirit was high at the events thanks to these girls and their dedicated coaching staff.  Look for a cheer camp again this summer!

Alpine Skiing

This season marked the second year that SMA had a boys and girls MSHSL Alpine team.  This year, we sent two girls to state.  The team is already becoming well known and respected in the Alpine ski community.

Nordic Skiing

Nordic Ski also competed in their second varsity level MSHSL ski season.  We hosted our first meet at our wonderfully groomed 5K Sentinel Trail located right behind the high school, with plans for hosting two meets this coming winter.  The boys sent one skier to state, marking the first ever SMA Nordic skier at state!
